Over the last year, Mathiou Services has been teaming up with a few local universities to connect students to real-life experiences.
Last week, we celebrated the completion of Johns’s internship here at Mathiou Services. Completing his Master of Professional Practice at Bond University. John worked in our estimating team alongside our Senior Estimator, Dane, and another fellow internee (now employee), Manish.
“My internship was a chance for me to gain practical experience and apply theoretical knowledge from university to the working environment. “
“My goal was to learn as much as I can by observing, helping team members when they need me. Specifically, I aimed to learn how to use industry software, read and interpret drawings quickly, communicate with colleagues, and prepare quotes for clients. So far, I have achieved all these goals.”
We asked John a few questions about his time here, this is what he had to say.
Why are you doing this internship?
I want to become an estimator in the future. Mathiou Services has offered me a chance to gain skill sets that are valuable preparation for me before jumping into the industry.
How has the process been so far?
It has been a fantastic time for me at Mathiou Services.
Working with the team was such an enjoyable experience. I learned how to read drawings, interpret photos, plan, and prepare a quote, and how to talk to team members to get information. I also learned how to communicate with them when the job has been done.
What kind of work have you been doing with us?
I assisted the head estimator with measuring, document controls, preparing quotes for clients, and created working templates for core items. I also helped check calculations in some outsourced BoQ to ensure there’s no mistakes or omitted items.
John graduates with his Masters this month, and we wish him all the best with all his future endeavors.
